Till 1961 this region was called Elar, and only from 1963 it was named after Abovyan.

According to the legend, the queen Shamiram of Asorique made a proposal to Ara the Beautiful( the king of Armenia), but Ara refused the proposal saying “I will not betray my Nuard… As Shamiram was crazy about the beauty of Ara, she took hazards and tried for the second time to send a delegation. As it was supposed her whim suggestion was ignored, and as Shamiram was grisly irritated she threw down the glove to Ara declaring War. During the war Ara the Beautiful was dressed like normal soldier and he was killed. But she had ordered her troop to take Ara only alive. When she learnt the tragic news she was in a flood of tears, and near the corpse of Ara the Beautiful she tried to revivify him and she cried, (El Ara) and this region was called Elar, and she also begged God saying ( Ar znni) and the region was called Arzni.

          For the first time the name Elar was used by Armenian manuscript Stepanos Orbelyan in XIII c. 

            Elar was situated in the Kotayk uplain, between the rivers Hrazdan and Arzni.

            It is surrounded with mountain-rages, like in the east-Geghama m. , in the north-Hatis(2528m) and Gutanasar(2299m. , which is a dead volcano).

            The climate-dry land. In January the middle temperature-4 C-14^oC( the lowest – 40^oC), in July the temperature-6-24^oC( the highest 40^oC).

            The big rivers-Hrazdan, Azat, Getar. The big lake-Akna.

            The railways Yrevan-Sevan (42km) and Erevan-Tbilisi.

             Now the mayor of Abovyan is Mr. Karapet Guloyan.
